He adds that people have been scaring the public by making them feel like the Terminator is coming, but he counters, “In fact, these are just powerful tools that can learn by examples, but they don’t have consciousness, they don’t have common sense. So, that’s not what we should be scared about. We should be scared about the ethical implications of these systems that make decisions for us without us knowing how that classification was made.”
He points out a common error in basic sentiment models: a sentence like “this phone is nice, but expensive” might be classified as positive simply because it contains the word “nice.” But swap the sentence to “this phone is expensive, but nice” and the emotional weight—and likelihood of purchase—shifts.
Cambria continues: “In the first case, I’m not going to buy it. In the second, I’m saying yeah, it’s expensive, but I may make the effort. These subtleties are critical—and lost in most models.”
The clarity that changes everything

To help bridge that gap, Cambria proposes combining symbolic and sub-symbolic AI.
Borrowing from Marvel mythology, he calls sub-symbolic AI “black magic”—powerful but opaque. “You just feed this monster with examples and then you have something that can make decisions for you. So it’s extremely powerful but you don’t have control over it.”
Symbolic AI, on the other hand, is “white magic.” It requires humans to model knowledge and build semantic graphs. “In the past, symbolic AI was too slow and costly,” Cambria notes. “But now we use machine learning to help build those graphs automatically.”
The result is a new three-layer knowledge representation structure: conceptual primitives linked to common-sense concepts, connected to named entities. This structure allows machines to reason more like humans do—understanding context, resolving ambiguity, and mapping sentiment more accurately.
From theory to impact
Cambria’s SenticNet platform has already demonstrated how these hybrid models can parse tweets, reviews, and blog posts to uncover nuanced sentiment trends. Rather than scoring texts as simply positive or negative, SenticNet explains why a sentence has that polarity.
That visibility makes a difference in high-stakes business environments. Marketers using primitive sentiment tools risk being misled. A basic algorithm might label a sarcastic tweet as positive. Cambria’s system, by contrast, understands tone, context, and structure.
“This is something we, as people, can do very well,” he says. “But machines? They need help. Past approaches didn’t take into account things like anaphora, sarcasm, metaphor.”

“As an executive, you shouldn’t rely blindly on a machine learning algorithm,” he says. “Use your historical data to extract common rules. Then build a semantic network or a rule-based system you can inspect.”

“The truth is that nobody knows how the human brain processes language,” he adds. “We know the hardware, but not the operating system. That’s why we need to break the problem down, and bring the pieces back together.”
