Computer direct marketer Dell Computer Corp., Round Rock, TX, gained ground on its struggling rival Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, in second-quarter shipments of personal computers in the United States, according to two leading surveys.
Compaq retained its grasp on the No. 1 spot, with 16.8 percent of the market vs. 16.4 percent for Dell, according to research firm Dataquest, San Jose, CA. International Data Corp., Framingham, MA, which includes some servers in its definition of PCs that Dataquest does not, placed Compaq at No.1 with 16.6 percent of shipments, followed by Dell with 16.3 percent.
IDC's data also showed that IBM, Armonk, NY, surpassed Gateway, San Diego, for the No. 3 position in the domestic PC rankings. The research firm calculated that IBM garnered 8 percent of the market, followed by 7.8 percent for Gateway. Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, CA, captured the fifth spot in IDC's rankings.
