An Indianapolis mother, Latea Hentz, and her two children are facing charges after allegedly attacking a 14-year-old boy on his school bus.
The family claims the boy was bullying Hentz’s 13-year-old son, with the mother asserting the school had done nothing to address the issue.
The violent incident, which resulted in a fractured nose and bruised eye for the alleged bully, was captured on the bus’s security camera and went viral.
The incident took place in Warren Township, a suburb of Indianapolis, on March 6.
As per the footage from the bus’s security camera and viral videos taken by students, Hentz, her 17-year-old daughter, and 13-year-old son can be seen making their way onto the bus and attacking the eighth-grade student.
Despite being told by the bus driver that no parents are allowed on the bus, Hentz allegedly ignored the warning and told the driver to call the police.
Once onboard, Hentz’s daughter and son reportedly started attacking the boy immediately while Hentz was heard encouraging them.
Witnesses reported that Hentz and her children continued to beat up the boy even as other students pleaded for them to stop.
At one point, Hentz’s 17-year-old daughter allegedly turned to a 10-year-old girl on the bus and asked if “she wants some too.”
The assault only ended when police arrived at the scene. But as she was leaving, Hentz allegedly made an open threat to other students on the bus.
Following the incident, the young victim was taken to Riley Children’s Hospital where doctors confirmed his nose was fractured and his left eye was bruised and swollen.
In her defense, Hentz claimed that her son had been bullied by this boy for several weeks and that he had even been slapped by him the day before.
She also claimed that despite being aware of these issues, her son’s school had done nothing to intervene.
However, in a subsequent interview with Warren Township police child abuse department, the victim gave a different account of events leading up to and during the attack.
According to him, it was Hentz’s son who had been picking on him, making “racist jokes” and “comments about ICE.”
Following the incident, Hentz was initially charged with misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct, intimidation, and trespassing.
But on Tuesday, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office escalated the charges, indicting Hentz on four felonies: criminal confinement, battery resulting in moderate injury, intimidation, and criminal trespass.
This incident has ignited a fierce debate about bullying and the appropriate responses to it.
Hentz’s actions, while extreme and legally condemned, highlight the profound frustration and desperation that parents can feel when their child is being bullied, especially if they perceive that the school or relevant authorities are not effectively addressing the issue.
