Office supplies retailer Staples Inc. last week announced the purchase of a 766,000-square-foot facility that was formerly occupied by the bankrupt Service Merchandise Inc. The fulfillment center in Montgomery, NY, will support Staples' catalog, e-commerce and contract customers. Service Merchandise sold the facility to Staples for an undisclosed amount under the supervision of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which is overseeing the reorganization of Service Merchandise. Staples, Framingham, MA, plans to convert existing fulfillment centers to cater to its catalog, e-commerce and contract channels. The company has multichannel distribution centers in Stockton, CA; Ontario, CA; Charlotte, NC; and Putnam, CT. It is building a new facility in London, OH.
