United Parcel Service suspended plans to furlough up to 100 pilots in its air cargo operations after a “favorable response to voluntary leave and separation offers,” the company said yesterday.
Thirty-six pilots accepted the voluntary offers. Also contributing to the decision was that 56 UPS pilots are on active military duty, said Rick Barr, airline operation manager at UPS.
The company announced the furlough plan last month, saying the cuts were needed because newer planes in its fleet require only two crew members, compared with three for older jets.
The air cargo operation has 2,500 pilots and performs 1,800 flights daily.
