You read it twice. Something feels off. The words are right, but they land nowhere. You’re holding a perfectly wrapped gift box with nothing inside.
This peculiar hollow feeling has become one of the defining experiences of our technological moment.
AI systems now generate responses indistinguishable from human writing in their technical competence, yet they consistently fail to provide the emotional nourishment we seek when we reach out for connection.
The gap between linguistic sophistication and emotional resonance has never been wider, and that gap tells us something crucial about what human connection actually requires.
The hunger underneath our digital efficiency
When we turn to AI for help with genuinely human problems, we reveal a deeper tension than mere technological curiosity.
We’re caught between two competing desires that pull us in opposite directions. We want the convenience of instant, well-structured answers. We also want to feel understood in the way only another human can understand us, through the shared vulnerability of having lived a messy, uncertain life.
This tension isn’t new. We’ve been moving toward increasingly efficient communication for decades. Email replaced phone calls. Text messages replaced email. Now AI threatens to replace even our text messages.
Each step promised to save time, and each step delivered on that promise. What we didn’t account for was how much we’d miss the inefficiencies we eliminated.
The long pause before someone responds to a difficult question. The awkward phrasing that reveals they’re struggling to find the right words. The tangent that had nothing to do with your question but reminded you both of a shared experience.
When translating research into practical applications, I’ve noticed that people consistently describe AI interactions using spatial metaphors.
They say the responses feel “distant” or “surface level” or that “nobody’s home.” These aren’t complaints about accuracy. AI systems often provide factually correct, logically sound advice.
The problem exists in a different dimension entirely. We can sense the absence of lived experience behind the words, the missing weight of someone who has also struggled and failed and found their way through uncertainty.
The illusion of understanding
We’ve developed a dangerous habit of conflating different types of intelligence.

They structure responses in ways that mirror therapeutic communication. They validate feelings and acknowledge complexity. All the right notes are there.
But empathy requires more than hitting the right notes. It requires the resonance that comes from one consciousness recognizing itself in another.
Marketing language around AI compounds this confusion. We’re told these systems “learn” and “understand” and “think.” These anthropomorphic descriptions make it harder to see what AI actually does, which is process patterns in data at scales no human could manage.
That’s genuinely impressive. It’s also fundamentally different from understanding what it feels like to disappoint someone you love, or to watch your certainties crumble, or to discover unexpected joy in an ordinary moment.
The most seductive noise comes from our own experience of how intelligent these responses seem. When AI provides a nuanced analysis of a complex situation, when it references relevant research, when it anticipates follow-up questions, we mistake this technical competence for depth.
We forget that depth in human communication comes from somewhere else entirely: from the shared condition of being finite creatures trying to make meaning in an uncertain world.
What machines cannot hold
The emptiness we feel in AI responses isn’t a technical problem waiting to be solved through better algorithms. It’s information about what human connection actually requires: the presence of another consciousness that has been shaped by suffering, joy, and the daily work of being alive.
Reclaiming the gift of human presence
Understanding this changes how we might use these tools without losing ourselves. AI systems can help us organize information, structure our thinking, and explore possibilities we hadn’t considered.
These are genuine gifts. But they cannot replace the friend who sits with us in silence because words feel inadequate, or the therapist whose own struggles inform how they hold space for ours, or the colleague who understands our frustration because they’ve faced the same institutional barriers.
The path forward requires distinguishing between problems that benefit from optimization and experiences that require presence. Some questions genuinely need efficient answers. When you want to know how to format a document or understand a concept, AI serves beautifully.
But when you’re trying to figure out whether to leave a relationship, or how to talk to your teenager about difficult topics, or what to do with your grief, you need something else entirely. You need someone who has skin in the game of being human.
This means developing a more sophisticated relationship with convenience itself. Every tool that saves us time asks us to consider what we’re saving that time for.
If we use AI to handle routine communications so we have more capacity for deep conversations with actual humans, we’ve made a wise trade.
If we use it to avoid the discomfort of uncertain, inefficient human connection altogether, we’ve automated ourselves into isolation.
What I’ve seen in resilience workshops is that people who maintain strong connections share a common practice: they protect certain spaces from optimization.
They insist on phone calls instead of text chains for important conversations. They meet friends in person even when video calls would be more convenient.
They choose the slower, messier path because they understand that human connection doesn’t scale the way data does.
The practice of presence
The emptiness in AI responses serves as a useful mirror. It shows us what we actually value when we strip away everything except linguistic competence.
We value the stumbling and uncertainty that reveals someone is genuinely grappling with our question.
We value the personal anecdote that wasn’t asked for but illuminates something true.
We value the admission of not knowing, which creates space for us to not know together.
This doesn’t mean rejecting these tools. It means understanding their proper place.
Let AI draft your email and organize your thoughts and suggest frameworks. Then bring those structured ideas to another human who can help you figure out what they mean in the context of your specific, irreplaceable life.
Use the efficiency to create more room for inefficiency. Use the optimization to protect what cannot be optimized.
The goal here isn’t to romanticize human messiness or pretend that inefficiency is always valuable. Sometimes inefficiency is simply waste.
But in the realm of emotional connection and personal meaning, what looks like inefficiency often turns out to be the whole point. The long pauses, the awkward phrasing, the tangents and hesitations all signal that someone is actually present with you in the uncertainty. They’re figuring it out alongside you rather than retrieving a pre-formulated answer.
In the end, the smart but vacant feeling of AI responses tells us something we already knew but keep forgetting: being truly met requires the presence of someone who has also been lost.
The machine can tell you how to navigate, but it cannot walk the path beside you. That distinction, once understood, becomes the difference between using these tools wisely and letting them hollow out the very connections we built them to enhance.
