‘She Rises Up’, a powerful documentary focusing on the connection between women and poverty, will be distributed across North America by Abramorama. The film, marked to commence its cinematic journey from New York City’s Look Dine-In Cinemas on June 21, will make stops at many significant cities across the continent. Highlighting the grave issue usually ignored by mainstream media, the film reveals the suffering as well as the mettle of women mired in poverty.

Directed by Jane Doe and given life by stories of three women; Gladys Yupanqui, a mini-market owner in Peru, Magatte Wade, an emerging entrepreneur in Senegal’s cosmetic sector, and Selyna Peiris from Sri Lanka determined to expand her mother’s textile firm, ‘She Rises Up’ is a powerful narrative. Each story is a testament to the potential of economic growth in underprivileged communities and the power of resilience.

Enhancing the storytelling of the documentary is the original title song written and performed by five-time Grammy award-winner Angelique Kidjo.

Exploring women’s resilience in poverty

The song is a representation of Kidjo’s unique blend of traditional African music with contemporary Western sounds. The film also showcases rare footage of Kidjo’s performances, giving viewers a look into the renowned artist’s life and career.

The distribution and screening of the film will be managed by Abramorama, while Roco Films will showcase it in unconventional venues such as college campuses, churches, NGO premises, and among non-profit organizations. Following its theatrical release, the documentary will be brought to various non-traditional platforms.

Maureen Castle Tusty and James Tusty, the genius behind the inception of ‘She Rises Up’, have drawn their inspiration from the individuals they came across during the filming. Committed to bringing to the forefront experiences overlooked and wisdom underappreciated, they believe the audience will value the tireless efforts of the women featured.

Abramorama’s CEO Karol Martesko-Fenster, founder Richard Abramowitz, and Roco Films’ VP of Impact and Engagement, Kristin Cooney, are thrilled about the collaboration with Sky Films for the project. They are eager about the documentary’s potential impact and its ability to resonate with viewers while illuminating critical social issues.
