NordVPN reveals test for phone eavesdropping

Phone Test
Phone Test

Cybersecurity experts from NordVPN have discovered a simple test to determine whether your phone is eavesdropping on your conversations. The four-step process can help users determine if their devices use private discussions to serve targeted ads. To conduct the test, choose a unique topic you have never searched for or discussed near your phone.

Then, over the next few days, have multiple conversations about the topic within earshot of your device. Continue using your phone normally during this period, but avoid interacting with any content related to the chosen topic. After a few days, observe the ads on your social media feeds and other platforms connected to your device.

If you notice ads related to the topic you discussed, it may indicate that your phone has been listening to your conversations.

NordVPN researchers tested this method and found that ads started appearing just days after discussing a new topic.

In one case, a researcher began receiving targeted ads for hotels in Saudi Arabia within three days of discussing a potential trip there despite never having shown interest in the topic before. While the test results don’t definitively prove that the phones were eavesdropping, the timing of the ads strongly suggests it. Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN, notes that such ads could indicate that your device is gathering more information than you realize.

Using audio information for targeted advertising is not illegal if the user has consented to it, often by agreeing to terms and conditions without fully reading them. Most smartphone users may have unknowingly given permission for these practices when accepting their phone’s privacy policies. If you are concerned about your privacy, experts advise deactivating virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, as well as any apps with access to your microphone.

Carefully review the permissions you have granted to your devices and apps to protect your personal information.
