Google is reportedly planning a significant hardware change for its upcoming Pixel 10 series. According to recent reports, the company is considering replacing the Samsung-produced modems used in previous models with a new MediaTek T900 modem. A source inside Google has indicated that the company is currently testing the MediaTek T900 modem in its Pixel 10 prototypes.

While specific details about the chip’s capabilities are limited, as it hasn’t been used in any devices yet, it is expected to support the 3GPP Release 17 5G specification. Google’s decision to shift from Samsung to MediaTek for its 5G modem technology is likely aimed at improving the power efficiency of next year’s flagship series. The Pixel phones have received widespread praise, though some users have criticized the Samsung modems for issues such as overheating and subpar signal strength.

The company evaluated all available options, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 modem, which is used in Apple’s devices, before settling on MediaTek’s T900. This move is unexpected given Google’s previous use of Samsung’s Exynos modems.

Another reason for Google severing its alliance with Samsung may be the yield problems associated with Samsung’s first-generation 3nm GAA process. As Samsung grapples with these challenges, Google finds MediaTek’s solutions a more viable alternative for their baseband chips. A leaked image, reportedly showing a Pixel 10 case, suggests that there may not be major design changes for the new model.

However, rumors indicate that the new phone will be completely designed internally by Google. The performance of the new modem will be essential, especially in comparison to competitors like Apple’s A18 chip. The efficacy of MediaTek’s T900 modem in the upcoming Pixel 10 series will only be determined once the devices are released and rigorously tested.

While this move has surprised many, it underscores Google’s strategic choices in developing its hardware innovations. The Pixel 10’s release date is anticipated to be between August and October 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on the Google Pixel 10 as further information becomes available.
