Google Contacts is testing a new feature that will allow users to set a default third-party video calling app. This update could be rolled out in the next year. Currently, Google Contacts defaults to carrier video calling.
Users have to go through several steps to use a different app. The new feature, part of Google Contacts v4.46.53.705303683, will let users select a default app for video calls directly in the contact details. An APK teardown of the beta version shows that users will be able to long-press the video call button on a contact’s page to choose a default video calling app.
Once selected, the app’s icon will replace the carrier icon for that contact.
Default app selection for video calling
This ensures seamless communication through the preferred app.
If a contact has multiple numbers, long-pressing will display all available video calling options for easy selection. If a contact is unavailable on the chosen app, the system will indicate that the call will revert to a carrier-driven video call. This change significantly improves user experience by reducing friction when using third-party video calling tools like WhatsApp, Zoom, Messenger, and Telegram.
These platforms have become integral to both personal and professional communication. This update is not yet live in the current Google Contacts version but is expected to arrive in the coming year. Until then, users will have to continue manually launching third-party video calling apps.
Stay tuned for more updates on when this feature will be officially released and available for all users.
