The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released details about the tragic death of one of its operatives, Aminu Salisu, during an operation in Anambra State. Salisu was part of a team sent to arrest suspected internet fraudsters in Ifite, Awka, on January 17. The operation initially resulted in the arrest of 37 suspects.

However, the situation escalated when Joshua Ikechukwu, who had been monitoring the investigators through a CCTV camera, refused to open the door and instead opened fire on the officers. Salisu was killed, and another officer was wounded in the shooting. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and online medical supplies of questionable legitimacy.

Items recovered from his apartment included laptops, iPads, and recording devices. His involvement in internet fraud has been established, and he is currently in police custody, awaiting trial for the murder of Salisu.

The EFCC condemned the spread of false narratives about the incident on social media and urged the public to respect the grieving family, the Commission, and the nation by refraining from harmful conjecture. The Commission also warned about the increasing danger posed by internet fraudsters, who are now reportedly engaging in other serious crimes, including kidnapping, banditry, and ritual killings. The EFCC vowed to respond to any future attacks on its officers with the full force of the law and reiterated its commitment to combating internet fraud and corruption.

The EFCC expressed gratitude for the support and condolences from sister agencies and well-meaning individuals during this difficult time. The agency continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and support its efforts to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
