Firefighters worked through the night after a large fire took hold of a home in Herne Bay on Friday evening. Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) were called to the scene on Grand Drive at around 6:45 pm. Residents in the surrounding area were urged to keep windows and doors closed as large plumes of smoke filled the air.
A road closure was soon implemented on Grand Drive as six fire engines and a height vehicle were used to bring the flames under control. Occupants had evacuated the property before the arrival of emergency responders. While firefighters battled the blaze through the night, KFRS urged anyone traveling near Grand Drive to avoid the area.
Herne Bay fire brings overnight battle
In an update shared at 3 am on Saturday morning, the fire service confirmed that the fire had been successfully extinguished and responders were working to dampen remaining hot spots. By 6 am, KFRS announced that all firefighting operations had been completed and the road closure lifted.
KFRS stated: “Firefighting operations have now finished at a house in Grand Drive, Herne Bay. Earlier warnings to avoid the area, due to road closures, have now been lifted.”
“At the height of the incident, six fire engines and a height vehicle were in attendance as crews, wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the flames using hose reel jets and main jets. The cause is not yet known, but it is being investigated.”
This incident comes less than 36 hours after crews dealt with another fire, where a blaze broke out at a car repair shop in Pier Avenue early on Sunday morning.
Six fire engines were called to tackle the fire at Chris Riches Ltd, a family-run business established in 1978. The recent spate of fires has left the community in shock, as they await further information from authorities regarding the causes of these devastating incidents.
