Consumerist broke a story today about a new iPhone app that lets users punch all of their loyalty card numbers into their phones. The app, called CardStar, saves your loyalty card data. When you’re checking out, just choose which loyalty card you’re using, and a scannable barcode shows up right on the iPhone screen. Pretty neat, eh?
I wonder how seriously this app will catch on, and if it will result in increased use of grocery discount cards and the like. Honestly, since you have to pull out your credit card at checkout anyway, I don’t see why opening your wallet to get a loyalty card out is such a hassle, unless you have 50 different cards stowed away in there, George Costanza-style. However, it’s still a neat idea, especially if stores can figure out a way to add extra incentives and attach mobile offers to these cards once they’re in the phone.
CardStar is currently free on the app store.
