At today’s DMDays keynote, Mike Gamson, VP of corporate solutions at LinkedIn, spoke about how marketers are using Web 2.0 tactics to spread their brand messaging and engage consumers without spending a lot of money on advertising.
While it is a little unnecessary to still be hearing the term Web 2.0 in 2009 — and to have the speaker define it for us, really, is there anyone in the room who doesn’t know what it means or hasn’t looked it up? — his talk was relevant to marketers looking to engage their customers through social media.
The key attributes that Gamson recommends marketers look for are to create campaigns that enable collaboration, promote interaction, empower individuals, remove geographic boundaries and aggregate opinion. Gamson also recommends that marketers create a social graph of who is engaging in the conversation to help better understand who your audience is and address speaking to this specific audience.
