Last week Twitter topped Digg: Hitwise

Last week, for the first time since its launch, Twitter surpassed Digg in market share visits. The results put out by Hitwise, show that Web users between 25 and 34 account for the biggest increase. During the same time period last year, only 12% of Twitter users fell into this demographic. In the four weeks ending January 17, nearly 45% were of this age group.

One key finding was that Digg’s usership is pretty evenly dispersed across various age ranges (each of the five age groups range from 16-23%). Twitter on the other hand, is all over the map. While 45% of users are between 25 and 34, only 7% are between 18 and 24. It seems the young’uns have yet to widely adopt Twitter, which is actually quite surprising to me.

In other Twitter news, Barack Obama has officially taken over the White House’s Twitter page. While the current tweets are rather tame, it will be interesting to see how the new prez plans to utilize the technology in the coming years.
