The donation pile-up

So I made my year-end donations this year — nothing outstanding in terms of the amounts, but a monetary shout-out to about 8 different nonprofits. But what is it about donating that makes a nonprofit’s direct mail go into overdrive? Since I donated a couple of weeks ago I’ve received mail from all of the organizations who received contributions from me. But since I only donate online, I wonder why they bother — why not communicate with me by e-mail? After all, I’m pretty sure I opted-in to all of their e-mail communications. Still, I continue to receive mail — and even a couple of phone calls. It would be nice to discover an organization that really gets how I like to donate — by e-mail, once a year, the same amount, no muss no fuss. I don’t need to get return address labels, Christmas cards, or stuffed animals. Just a thank you and a few updates over the year, and we’re good — I promise.
