MySpace Admits Defeat?

One of the founders of MySpace and InterMix Media, which sold MySpace to News Corp, said this week that Facebook had won the battle between the top two social networking sites.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Brett Brewer said that Facebook was expanding at a much quicker pace than its MySpace rival. He recognized a fundamental shift in the way people are now using social media as opposed to a couple of years ago.

People go on Facebook to connect or reconnect with people they know. People use MySpace, on the other hand, to meet and connect with people they don’t know, said Brewer.

On MySpace, a relationship must be formed. With Facebook, the relationship is already there. Facebook has won because the amount of people who use social networking sites has vastly increased in the last couple of years. Why try to make friends on MySpace when your actual friends are already on Facebook? Simply, Facebook is easier.

Brewer was quick to point out that this is not the end of the battle. He believes Facebook will be surpassed by a new, as-of-yet nonexistent social networking site that effectively utilizes mobile technology. With more and more people using smart phones, it only seems logical that this is the next step. The question is what is your next move, Facebook?
