Bill Gates releases mosquitoes

Bill Gates went with a viral message at the TED conference in Los Angeles yesterday. The Microsoft-founder, who has spent millions trying to fight the malaria, released a jar full of mosquitoes on the audience claiming that poor people shouldn’t be the only ones exposed to the disease. He gave the wealthy, educated crowd of the Technology, Entertainment, Design show, a jump. Luckily, this was just some shock marketing and the insects were really not infected with the disease.

After taking anti-malaria pills for a month in October –before and after vacationing on an island where the CDC claims that all mosquitoes have malaria– I get what he was going for. Even on the pills, it is scary to get mosquito bites from infected insects.
