Hoy Nueva York, a free, Spanish-language daily published by ImpreMedia LLC, laid off 16 staffers and stopped publishing last week.
ImpreMedia is maintaining the Hoy Web site and will continue printing its other, larger New York-based daily, El Diario La Prensa. Rossana Rosado, publisher and CEO of El Diario, explained that one reason for the print cut was that the two papers — 53,000-circ El Diario and 31,000-circ Hoy — experienced a lot of overlap in readers.
“Hoy was a free-distribution daily, and we decided to go just to a digital daily because we already have the number-one selling Spanish-language newspaper in New York,” Rosado said. “We kept two people from that staff and have the complete staff of El Diario and Impre.com to help feed and build the Web site and do stuff that is different from the daily newspaper and different from El Diario.”
The last print Hoy was published on Dec. 30. An article in El Diario on Dec. 31 explained Hoy’s absence to readers. Both Hoy and El Diario cater to New Yorkers who prefer speaking or reading in Spanish. The target reader age runs from 18-51.
