The US Postal Service is seeking comment on a proposed standard that would require mailers to place all presorted bundles on pallets with addresses facing up. Comments on this proposal are due back to the USPS by April 3.
The notice was published in the Federal Register today. The USPS said the revised standards will aid in the validation of bundle contents and will enhance the manual distribution of bundles.
This change is also needed for the automated preparation and future induction of the Flats Sequencing System (FSS), which is designed to further automate the sorting of flat mail, according to the USPS.
“As we approach deployment of FSS, we are closely examining other technologies that will enhance our efforts to make the most of this investment and achieve the lowest combined costs for handling flat-size mail,” the USPS said in the notice.
