USA Today to open store

USA Today plans to extend its brand footprint by opening a USA Today store in New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

Merchandise at the store will be displayed following the newspaper’s color scheme û lifestyle products in purple, sports in red, financial goods in green and news in blue. Executives at the paper would not elaborate on the types of products being sold, but publisher Craig Moon stated plans to develop USA Today-branded sudoku games and food products in the future.

USA Today has been working on a host of expansion projects lately. The paper started offering widgets to online readers earlier this month. The daily has also been running a PR blitz in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Eleven million unique visitors visit the USA Today Web site every month, and online ad revenue grew 11 percent in the most recent reporting period. The print paper currently has a circulation of 2.28 million, making it the largest circulation daily in the country.

USA Today is published by Gannett Co., McLean, VA. Gannett, which publishes 85 daily newspapers, recently reported that its August revenue has dropped 3.5 percent since this time last year. However, ad revenue for flagship title USA Today grew 6.9 percent, and ad pages remained the same.
