Mail that was detained inside the Trenton, NJ, mail processing facility after it closed Oct. 18 because of anthrax contamination will be delivered to Trenton-area customers starting tomorrow, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
This amounts to 800,000 letters, magazines, large envelopes and parcels. The mail has been loaded onto 10 trailers and taken to Ion Beam Applications, an irradiation facility in Bridgeport, NJ. Once sanitized with electron beam technology, the mail is being brought to a postal facility in South River, NJ, for processing. Many of the operations previously performed at the Trenton plant have been transferred to this facility.
The sanitized mail all will be delivered over the next two to three weeks. Letter mail will be delivered first, followed by parcels and flats (large envelopes or magazines).
Large packages and parcels will bear a label recommending that customers check with their physicians before consuming any prescription drugs or foods that are enclosed. Irradiation might affect medications.
