Air India introduces in-flight Wi-Fi service

Air India has introduced inflight WiFi on all its flights. This sets a new standard in domestic aviation. The carrier has expanded its Vista Stream wireless inflight entertainment service to its narrowbody fleet.

This ensures seamless entertainment for passengers across both its international and domestic networks. Vista Stream premiered in August 2024 on Air India’s wide-body fleet. It allows guests to stream various content directly to their personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

The service aims to provide an immersive and smooth entertainment experience.

“As we continue to transform Air India into a world-class airline, we are happy to introduce Vista Stream that enables our guests to access digital entertainment content on their personal devices during their flight. With the introduction of Vista Stream across our narrowbody fleet, uninterrupted entertainment (BYOD) service will be available throughout the entire domestic and international network,” said Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India.

The inflight WiFi feature includes a live map for real-time flight tracking. It is compatible with iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS devices.

Introducing innovative in-flight connectivity

This ensures easy access to entertainment for all passengers throughout the duration of their flight. This development follows recent amendments by the Ministry of Communications to the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules. The amendments permit in-flight WiFi on domestic flights, even at altitudes of 3,000 meters.

Inflight internet is already a well-established amenity on several international airlines. For instance, Hawaiian Airlines started offering free high-speed Starlink WiFi in 2024. United Airlines is also set to test Starlink’s fast WiFi service this year, with passenger flights expected to start next year.

Additionally, Qatar Airlines has partnered with Starlink for high-speed WiFi connectivity. Airlines typically deliver inflight internet through two primary methods: air-to-ground systems and satellite connectivity. The air-to-ground system functions similarly to cellular networks, with ground-based towers transmitting signals directly to aircraft.

Satellite-based WiFi employs specialized antennas on aircraft to receive signals from orbiting satellites. SpaceX’s Starlink exemplifies the advancements in this field, providing reliable high-speed connectivity to participating airlines.
