Air India has launched in-flight Wi-Fi internet services on its domestic routes. This new offering will allow passengers to stay connected while in the air. As of January 1, 2025, passengers on Air India flights can activate the Wi-Fi feature.

They need to turn on their Wi-Fi settings and choose the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network.

Then they can log in by entering their PNR and surname on the Air India portal to start using free internet. This service is expected to improve customer satisfaction and productivity.

Passengers can now work, stay in touch with family and friends, and enjoy online entertainment while flying within India.

The introduction of in-flight Wi-Fi puts Air India among a growing number of global airlines that offer internet services on board. It reflects the increasing demand for connectivity during travel.

Air India, the only Indian full-service carrier, has launched in-flight Wi-Fi across its Boeing 787-9 and select Airbus A321neo aircraft. The airline is the first to provide Wi-Fi services on domestic routes within India. The service lets passengers browse the internet, access social media, conduct business, and communicate with contacts while in the air.

Chief Customer Experience Officer Rajesh Dogra says this advancement meets modern travel demands, serving both leisure and business travelers’ connectivity needs. The Wi-Fi service works above 10,000 feet and supports multiple device connections at the same time across iOS and Android platforms. Air India started this service through a pilot program on international routes, including flights to London, Paris, and Singapore.

It offered free access during the introductory period. Passengers can access the service by connecting to the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network and entering their PNR and last name through the airline’s portal. The connectivity experience depends on various technical factors, such as satellite connectivity, bandwidth usage, flight routes, and government regulations.

The airline plans to expand this service across its entire fleet over time. Air India celebrates three years under Tata Group ownership this January 2025.

It is halfway through its Vihaan.AI transformation initiative designed to create a global airline with Indian heritage. The program includes upgrades across operational systems, infrastructure, and workforce development. The airline has hired 9,000 new employees who have completed enhanced service training at its new 800,000-square-foot facility in Gurugram.

This facility is now the largest aviation training center in South Asia. The fleet modernization program has added over 100 new aircraft, including India’s first Airbus A350s operating on Delhi-London and Delhi-New York routes. One-third of Air India’s wide-body fleet now has upgraded interiors and entertainment systems.

Complete fleet renovation is scheduled for completion within two years. The narrow-body fleet serving domestic and regional routes is also being modernized, with a target completion by mid-2025. Air India completed its merger of four Tata airlines in late 2024.

It consolidated operations into a full-service carrier and Air India Express for low-cost operations. Former aircraft now serve metro-to-metro domestic routes and international destinations like Frankfurt and Singapore. This ensures consistent service across the network.

The consolidated fleet has 300 aircraft, allowing service to over 100 destinations globally. Air India’s expansion continues with an order for 100 more aircraft, adding to the 470 aircraft committed in 2023. Supporting infrastructure developments include a new 12-bay maintenance facility and training school in Bengaluru, a 34-aircraft flight school in Amravati, and the training academy in Gurugram.

Customer experience improvements include upgraded in-flight dining, new amenities, and streaming entertainment across all aircraft. The rebranded Maharaja Club frequent flyer program serves 10 million members, while the AI.g chatbot receives international recognition. Premium lounges are expanding with a new facility in Bengaluru, planned openings in Delhi during 2025, and future developments across major cities.

The airline’s transformation since privatization has significantly modernized operations. The 30,000-strong workforce focuses on improving service quality across all areas to achieve world-class airline status.
