Apple Intelligence storage needs increase significantly

Apple’s latest iOS 18.2 update has doubled the storage requirements for its AI-powered Apple Intelligence features, jumping from 4GB to 7GB. This increase applies to all supported devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The significant rise in storage needs is attributed to the new AI features introduced in iOS 18.2, such as the Genmoji custom emoji creator, an AI image generator called Playground, the Visual Intelligence feature for identifying objects and places, and the integration of ChatGPT with Siri for enhanced text composition.

While these features offer users a more robust and responsive AI experience, the increased storage requirement has left some users frustrated, especially those with limited device storage. Apple’s approach to on-device AI processing prioritizes faster performance, improved responsiveness, and enhanced privacy protection compared to cloud-based models. However, this comes at the cost of consuming valuable storage space that could otherwise be used for photos, videos, apps, or files.

Users who wish to enable Apple Intelligence across multiple devices face an even greater challenge, as the combined storage requirement for an iPhone, iPad, and Mac totals 21GB. Unfortunately, Apple does not offer the flexibility to pick and choose which AI features to enable, leaving users with limited options: upgrade to a higher storage tier when purchasing new hardware, pay for additional iCloud storage, or forgo Apple Intelligence altogether.

Increased storage needs for AI features

Apple defends its approach, with a spokesperson stating, “We believe that on-device processing is the best way to ensure a fast, responsive, and secure AI experience for our users. While we understand the concerns about storage requirements, we are committed to delivering cutting-edge features that enhance the user experience.”

Looking ahead, relief doesn’t appear to be on the horizon. While iOS 18.3 doesn’t introduce major new AI capabilities, Apple has announced bigger Siri upgrades for iOS 18.4 in April, which could push the storage requirements even higher.

For those struggling with storage limitations, Apple offers an opt-out option. Users can completely disable Apple Intelligence by navigating to Settings > Apple Intelligence. Additionally, Apple provides suggestions for freeing up storage space on devices, such as offloading unused apps and data.

As Apple continues to innovate and enhance its AI capabilities, users should be prepared for the corresponding increase in storage needs. Balancing these advancements with available device space will be key for those wishing to take full advantage of Apple Intelligence’s latest features.
