EFCC arrests 23 internet fraudsters in Oyo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 23 suspected internet fraudsters in Ibadan, Oyo State. Operatives from the EFCC’s Ibadan Zonal Directorate made the arrests in the city’s Akobo area. Credible intelligence linked the suspects to fraudulent internet activities.

During the operation, the EFCC recovered various items believed to be proceeds of illegal activities. These items include eight exotic cars, multiple laptops, mobile phones, and a PlayStation game console. The EFCC stated that the suspects would be charged in court after investigations.

In a separate operation, the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the EFCC arrested 22 suspected internet fraudsters in Abia State on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Umuagu and Olokoro. The operatives recovered six exotic cars, eight laptops, and 36 mobile phones from the suspects.

They will also face charges in court after the completion of investigations. The EFCC remains committed to combating Nigeria’s internet fraud and other financial crimes.

The commission has assured the public that the suspects will face the full wrath of the law. In another development, the EFCC disclosed that Aisha Wakil, also known as Mama Boko-Haram and two others were convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment each. The sentencing occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri.

Wakil, the CEO of the Complete Care and Aid Foundation (NGO), along with Programme Manager Tahiru Saidu Daura and Country Director Prince Lawal Shoyode, faced charges of cheating, conspiracy, and giving false information totaling N6 million. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges prepared against them by the EFCC. However, Justice Aisha Kumaliya convicted them and sentenced them to five years imprisonment without an option of a fine.

The judge also ordered the defendants to jointly and severally restitute the balance of N3.5 million to the petitioner or serve an additional five years jail term each in default.
