Email Insider Summit gets inside the e-mail social media debate

We’ve heard about social media and e-mail. Questions have been raised: Is social media killing e-mail? Is it the next best thing for e-mail? These are the questions that we’ve heard tossed around. But at yesterday’s Email Insider Summit, panelists shed some nice light on the subject. Be it MySpace, OurStage (a social network for bands) or General Mills, it seems that social media is only helping marketers with their overall ability to reach consumers. And this doesn’t mean the death of e-mail. In fact, a pancake photo contest on a social network, could be the best way to build an e-mail program. It is filled with key e-mail efforts —peer-to-peer  sharing, “virability,”list building and data segmentation . It’s no wonder that the VP of international marketing at MySpace, Jay Stevens, has his roots in e-mail.
