Epic Games has announced that its popular free games program will now be available on the Epic Games Store for Android and iOS devices. Users can expect monthly drops of free games, with plans to increase the frequency to weekly later in the year. Starting today, users can claim the first free game, “Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee,” available through February 20.
Upcoming titles include “Bloons TD 6.” These third-party offerings will accompany Epic’s own games like “Fortnite” and “Rocket League,” which are already available on the mobile platform. Epic has voiced concerns over Apple’s and Google’s sideloading policies, arguing that these deter users from downloading the Epic Games Store. The company claims that it takes up to 12 steps to install the store on an Android device, a process riddled with system prompts that Epic describes as “scare screens.”
Epic also highlighted that there are currently fewer third-party titles available on iOS compared to Android due to these restrictions.
Epic’s mobile game expansion
With 17 third-party games on Android and 15 on iOS, the company aims to increase this number significantly. Despite the challenges, the Epic Games Store has seen 29 million mobile installations.
However, this is still short of Epic’s goal of 100 million installations by the end of 2024. The company believes that policies and restrictions by Apple and Google are contributing factors to this shortfall. In addition to new games, the mobile version of the Epic Games Store now includes persistent account logins and auto-functionality, aimed at enhancing the user experience.
