The Great Bend Innovation Center, a $7 million development, intends to become a powerful growth engine and pivot of education for Barton County. The Center’s location at the intersection of 10th Street and K-96 Highway spotlights its strategic positioning.

This technically advanced facility expects to attract students, professionals, and startups from far and wide. With its state-of-the-art classrooms, research labs, coworking spaces, and event areas, the aim is to facilitate entrepreneurship, innovation, and skill development.

The project, currently under construction, is likely to be completed by the end of 2023. Additionally, there are plans to build partnerships with local businesses and educational institutions to strengthen the center’s impact.

Endowed with the latest technology, the center will provide a conducive environment for learning, collaboration, and innovation, leading to job creation and an economic boost for the local economy.

The project, as confirmed by Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger, has managed to raise 75% of the necessary funding through grants and large donations, including a $4.38 million state grant.

Efforts to secure the remaining 25% of the funds are underway through further fundraising efforts and grant applications.

The center will not rely on city or county budgets but will instead be primarily funded through grants, ensuring the project’s self-sufficiency and independence from taxpayer dollars.

Key features include a next-gen Fabrication Lab with advanced tools, such as 3D printers, flight simulators, and plasma cutters. This fosters a hands-on learning experience and encourages skills development and entrepreneurship.

Apart from this, an advanced commercial kitchen is being put in place. This resource will aid childcare providers, budding restaurateurs, and enhance the existing services at the Bright Beginning Childcare Center.

The center also has plans to incorporate Leafy Green Farms, a contemporary, pod-based farming space. This initiative is in response to the increasing number of retirements among farmers and the growing interest in controlled environment farming practices.

The objective, as put forth by Arnberger, is for the Innovation Center to emerge as a springboard of opportunities. Through various programs and initiatives, the center aims to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of entrepreneurship among the youth.
