JC Penney will close its call center in Carmichael, CA, on or before March 20.
“The decision to close the center is primarily the result of a steady reduction in call volume being handled by our Telemarketing Centers, as more customer traffic migrates to the Internet,” according to a company spokesman.
The center, which employs approximately 260 associates, is the second recent call center to be closed by the multichannel retailer in response to declining phone call volumes as more consumers shop online. In 2008, JC Penney closed a telemarketing center in Scranton, PA, citing similar reasons.
The multichannel retailer will continue to operate five call centers around the country.
