The recent transformation of The Champ Boutique Hotel in Hermosillo, Mexico, was led by local designer Jesús López.
With a focus on the desert environment and traditional Sonoran elements, López crafted an innovative redesign that combines contemporary style with cultural motifs.
The interiors now feature desert-themed colors, locally-inspired artwork, and fixtures which immerse guests in Sonoran culture.
López’s redesign also enhances the historical significance of the hotel’s location on Campodónico Street, named after local composer Rodolfo Campodónico.
Visitors can soak in the rich musical heritage and cultural past of Hermosillo as they explore its landmarks and eateries.
Influenced by the unique desert-like elements of the Champ project, López curated a subtle color palette that depicts the arid desert landscape and its dramatic transformation during rainfall.
Browns and yellows represent the dry state of the desert, while vibrant blues and greens signify the bursting life of the desert post-rainfall.
López’s approach aimed to create an experience that resonates emotionally with visitors, offering a sense of tranquility and renewal reminiscent of the desert.
He demonstrates his skill as a designer through his aesthetically pleasing and immersive designs, which celebrate nature.
López expanded his design vision to include product packaging, incorporating his unique desert-themed designs into postcards and transactional materials.
Vintage typography and local cultural motifs are utilised, establishing a sense of historical connection and reflecting the unique ambiance of the hotel.
To ensure an authentic redesign, López engaged in extensive research into the local history and the street’s namesake Rodolfo Campodónico.
Elements from this research were integrated into the decor and offerings of the hotel.
As part of his meticulous process, López collaborated with local artisans and historians to ensure a faithful representation of Hermosillo’s heritage.
Finally, López struck a balance between the client’s preferences and popular tastes by using design tactics that mimic the desert’s charm, thus setting the hotel apart from its competitors.
