In the latest salvo of the hot-button information privacy issue, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) said April 11 they will introduce a “bill of rights” intended to protect US citizens’ personal information both off- and online.
Dubbed The Commercial Privacy Bill of Rights Act of 2011, the senators indicated that this bipartisan legislation would enhance protection and control of personal information. Both senators have worked on some form of privacy legislation for years. Similar efforts have been introduced in the House.
Kerry is chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, while McCain formerly served as chairman of the Commerce Committee. The senators will hold a press conference to introduce the bill on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on April 12 at 12:30 pm.
