The search for the mysterious song recorded off German radio in the 1980s may finally be over. A Reddit user named Marijn1412 has claimed that the track, which has fascinated music lovers for years, is by the German band FEX. The hunt began in 2007 when an internet user named Lydia posted the song online, hoping to identify it.
Her brother Darius had recorded it on a cassette tape decades earlier. In 2019, the search intensified on social media and YouTube, with fans trying to track down the song based on its presumed opening lyric, “Like the Wind.”
On Monday, Marijn1412 made a breakthrough on a dedicated forum thread. The discovery came during research on German music events that FEX had participated in.
After contacting a member of the group, the song was reportedly confirmed as belonging to FEX, with the band revealing plans for a re-release. Michael Hädrich, the keyboardist, guitarist, and backing vocalist of FEX, spoke to a German publication about the viral search.
The rediscovery of ‘Most Mysterious Song’
He explained that the band was unaware of the internet phenomenon until recently. “We hadn’t noticed all this internet phenomenon at all, mainly because the title of the song was not known on the Internet,” Hädrich said. The rediscovery of the song happened when the Reddit user requested copies of old material from the band.
“Only then did he point out to me that ‘Subways of your Mind’ is the ‘Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’,” Hädrich noted. FEX is currently in the process of verifying the song. Hädrich claims that the group has numerous materials to prove the song is theirs, including the original recording session, statements, live recordings, and witnesses who were present during the initial session.
If verified, this marks another successful discovery in the field of “lost wave” music, a genre characterized by tracks with unknown origins. Music enthusiasts around the world continue to be engaged and excited by the search for these lost tracks.
