Samsung has announced a new feature for its upcoming One UI 7 update that will help users manage their notifications more effectively. The ‘filter notifications’ feature, found in Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings, will allow users to categorize and prioritize notifications based on three categories: old notifications, background activities, and minimized notifications. Old notifications are those received more than a few days ago.

Background activities are notifications from apps running in the background. Minimized notifications are those already set to be minimized. These filtered notifications will be grouped into a “X more notifications” pill at the bottom of the notification panel.

This ensures that all notifications remain accessible while the important ones are highlighted at the top. One UI 7, which is based on Android 15, is expected to be a significant update that brings several new features and changes to the user interface.

The update is anticipated to be released to the wider audience in a stable version sometime in January, potentially alongside the unveiling of the Galaxy S25 series. One of the notable additions in the One UI 7 beta is the Now Bar, similar to Apple’s Live Activities, as well as a clearer separation between the notification and Quick Settings drawers. The update will also bring more customization options, including setting the device’s refresh rate from within Game Booster, minor changes to the Quick Settings panel UI, and an array of bug fixes and performance improvements.

Reddit users exploring the second One UI 7 beta have discovered the new feature, which aims to enhance notification management. The feature description reads, “Filter notifications that are less important to you and show them as a group at the bottom of your notification panel.” This includes options to filter out old notifications, background activity notifications, and minimized notifications. When enabled, the ‘filter notifications’ feature hides notifications falling under the selected categories within an ‘X more notifications’ pill at the bottom of the regular notification panel.

For example, if the ‘Background activities’ notification filter is toggled on, the background app’s status notification will be hidden in a separate ‘more notifications’ bubble, ensuring that only the most important notifications remain front and center. With these updates, Samsung’s One UI 7 looks promising, aiming to enhance user experience by managing notifications more efficiently and providing users with greater control over their notification panel.
