TPG, one of Australia’s largest telecommunications providers, experienced a major outage on Monday afternoon, leaving millions of customers without internet access. The disruption began around 5:20 pm and affected broadband services across the country. TPG serves more than five million mobile users and two million broadband customers.

The company posted a brief statement on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “Our technical teams are working to resolve an issue causing disruption to fixed broadband services for our customers. We will keep customers up to date on our progress towards restoring services and apologise for the inconvenience.” TPG’s website and service status page are also down, showing a “504 Gateway Time-out” error. Thousands of complaints have flooded TPG’s official social media pages, with frustrated customers demanding answers and updates.

One user wrote on X, “While your team is working on DR, please establish an urgent communications channel to inform your customers on status.

Silence in comms is not good in such circumstances.”

Another user tweeted, “Will you at least acknowledge the outage for the millions of impacted customers?

By the way, I like the hold music on your phone lines, it’s kind of catchy but loses its rhythm after 20 minutes.”

The widespread failure has reignited concerns over the reliability of Australia’s telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in the wake of recent high-profile network disruptions. As of now, TPG has not provided an estimated time for service restoration. Broadband services for iiNet, Internode, and Kogan fixed internet customers were also affected, according to a company spokesman.

More than 14,000 Australians reported the outage to Downdetector, and many more took to social media to vent their anger about the outage. Affected customers expressed their frustration over the slow response from TPG, with some calling for better crisis management and others humorously suggesting that the company “turn it off and back on again.”

TPG Telecom is home to brands including Vodafone, TPG, iiNet, AAPT, Internode, Lebara, and Felix. It is the second largest telecommunications company listed on the Australian stock exchange.

TPG has been contacted for further comment.
