International shipper UPS recently introduced a ground option for shipping small packages from Mexico to the US. The company had previously offered Express and Expedited shipping options from Mexico, but the new service will reduce costs for shippers who don’t need short-term delivery dates.
Mexico is the United States’ second-largest trading partner, after Canada. The agency said 85% of Mexico’s total exports go to the US. “The Mexico-US trade lane as a whole is one of the world’s busiest and is growing,” said UPS spokesman Michael French.
The new rate category, called UPS Standard, reaches every address in Mexico and the lower 48 United States.
“Businesses are looking for less urgent alternatives to move their goods across the U.S.-Mexico border, especially in today’s tough economy,” French said. He said that the company was looking at offering a ground rate from the US to Mexico by 2010.
Currently, UPS rival FedEx Corp. offers International Priority and International Priority Freight rates.
