WaPo editorial touts five-day delivery

The US Postal Service received some support this week from The Washington Post‘s editorial board, which supported the proposed move to five-day home delivery as well as agency consolidation, in an editorial.

The Post‘s editorial board argued that Sen. Tom Carper’s (D-Del.) recently introduced bill that would allow the USPS to cut Saturday home delivery and close thousands of post offices is “well and good.”

“The post office network is long overdue for consolidation, and Americans will survive if the mail comes Monday through Friday,” said the Post‘s editorial board in its June 7 editorial.

However, the Post also gave a nod to proponents of eventual postal privatization in its editorial, saying that significant reform could transform the organization into “one that could eventually attract private capital as European postal agencies have done.”
