Apple has released the iOS 18.4 beta to developers, which includes a small but useful change for CarPlay. The update now allows CarPlay to display a third row of icons on larger infotainment screens, such as the 14-inch display in some Toyota Tundra models. This change enables users to access more apps quickly without swiping between pages.
However, vehicles with smaller screens, like the 9-inch display in a Honda Civic, will still show the standard two rows of four icons. While this update may seem minor, it is a welcome quality-of-life improvement for Apple’s phone mirroring system, as it takes advantage of the extra screen space available in some vehicles. Adding a third row of icons reduces drivers’ need to navigate multiple menus, ultimately minimizing distractions while on the road.
New CarPlay icons enhance functionality
This update is particularly beneficial for those who frequently use CarPlay during long drives and rely on it for in-car entertainment and navigation. iOS 18.4 is currently in beta testing and is expected to be released to the public in early April.
As the update progresses through the beta phase, users hope for more improvements to CarPlay, such as broader implementation of wireless connectivity and the potential for Apple to produce its own wireless adapters. While this update is appreciated, many users are still eagerly awaiting the release of CarPlay 2, which was originally promised for 2024. CarPlay 2 aims to offer greater integration with a vehicle’s system for a more seamless user experience.
As of January 2025, there has been no sign of this next-generation CarPlay, and the original timeline appears to have been delayed. Apple continues to collaborate with several car manufacturers on the updated system, and more details about the future of Apple CarPlay and the potential launch of CarPlay 2 may be revealed during Apple’s next major software showcase, which is expected to take place in June.
