Google introduces posture-based screen saver trigger

Google is working on a new way to trigger the screen saver on Android devices. In the upcoming Android 16 release, the screen saver could activate based on the device’s posture, without needing a dock. Currently, Android offers two options for triggering the screen saver: while charging, or while docked and charging.

However, many charging stands are not recognized as docks, which can be frustrating for users who want the screen saver to activate only when the device is upright on a stand. To address this issue, Android 16 may introduce a new “postured” state.

This means the device is upright and not flat. With this new trigger, the screen saver would activate when the device is upright and charging on a stand, rather than lying flat on a table. Evidence of this new feature has been found in the Android 16 Beta 2 code strings:

– `While postured`
– `While postured and charging`

Although the “postured” trigger is not yet available in the Beta version, it could potentially be included in the final release of Android 16.

This feature would make screen savers more accessible without relying on docks, and could gain wider adoption among users. It remains to be seen whether this new screen saver trigger will be available on both smartphones and tablets. As Android 16 continues to develop, more details about this and other new features will likely emerge.
