Cox Communications, a broadband and entertainment subsidiary of media company Cox Enterprises, named Mark Greatrex SVP and CMO on March 1. He will oversee all marketing activities including customer value management, branding and advertising.
Greatrex replaced Joe Rooney, who became the company’s SVP of brand marketing, social media and advertising last July. Rooney, who has worked for Cox for more than 24 years, reports directly to Greatrex.
Mallard Holliday, executive director of public affairs at Cox Communications, said he would not define Rooney’s position change as a demotion, but declined to elaborate.
Holliday would not say whether Cox searched internally to fill the chief marketer position or if it used a recruiter. “It’s an internal personnel decision,” he said. “We will not share if we looked internally or used a recruiter.” The company made no other changes to its marketing team, said Holliday.
Greatrex has more than 25 years of marketing experience. He previously worked at Coca-Cola, AOL and Eagle Family Foods. Greatrex will report directly to Leo Brennan, EVP and COO of Cox Communications.
Greatrex’s responsibilities also include acquisition and retention marketing, research and b-to-b marketing. He will also oversee pricing and bundling, marketing communications, and product and competitive marketing, the company said.
“Greatrex has valuable experience positioning consumer brands in a very competitive marketplace,” Brennan said in a statement. “His leadership will be instrumental as we communicate the advantages and value that Cox offers to customers.”
