Apple has released iOS 18.1, bringing a range of new features and improvements to iPhone users.

The update introduces call recording capabilities, allowing users to record phone calls by tapping a symbol in the top-left corner of the screen during a call. An automated voice alerts both parties that the call is being recorded, and the recording is saved to the Notes app for playback and transcription on newer iPhone models.

iOS 18.1 also brings several Apple Intelligence features, such as enhanced writing tools for emails, the Clean Up photo tool, and an upgraded Siri. These features require enrollment in the Apple Intelligence Waitlist. The update extends RCS messaging support to include Messages for Business, previously only available through iMessage.

Control Center has been refined, with some connectivity controls now tile-shaped and independent controls for Wi-Fi, VPN, AirDrop, and Satellite available for addition. Users can now change or add a new primary email address for their Apple ID via Settings. Home screen widgets will adopt any tint applied to apps, ensuring a cohesive look.

For users with a compatible Apple Watch running WatchOS 11, iOS 18.1 enables FDA-approved sleep apnea detection. The update also includes an expanded emoji keyboard with larger emoji and better organization of custom stickers.

A new drag-and-drop feature allows seamless file sharing between iPhones running iOS 18.1 and MacBooks, enhancing the interconnectivity of the Apple ecosystem. iOS 18.1 addresses 28 security vulnerabilities affecting Apple devices. Notable patches include fixes for issues in the Kernel, WebKit, and Siri that could allow apps to access sensitive data or break out of the Web Content sandbox.

Apple urges all iPhone users to update their devices as soon as possible to mitigate potential risks. The update also resolves several bugs, including a random reset issue affecting iPhone 16 users. To update to iOS 18.1, users can go to Settings > General > Software Update on their iPhone.

For those who prefer to wait, Apple has released iOS 17.7.1, which addresses many of the same security flaws but with a less extensive list of patches.
