Sam’s Club CEO resigns, Wal-Mart promotes four within C-suite

Sam’s Club president and CEO Brian Cornell will resign his position and be replaced by Rosalind Brewer, president of Wal-Mart U.S. East , effective Feb. 1, Sarah Spencer, Wal-Mart’s director of national media relations, confirmed Jan. 20.

Brewer will report to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. president and CEO Mike Duke. Prior to Wal-Mart, Brewer worked for Kimberly-Clark, progressing through various positions and eventually becoming president of a key business sector in 2004, according to a company statement.

Several other promotions within Wal-Mart’s C-suite also take effect Feb. 1.

Rollin Ford was promoted to chief administrative officer for the company, taking responsibility for the information systems division, global sourcing, global business processes, global shared services and global customer insights. Ford was most recently the company’s chief information officer, and joined Wal-Mart in 1983 as an hourly associate in the company’s logistics network.

Gisel Ruiz was promoted to EVP and COO for Walmart U.S., and will be responsible for the company’s U.S. operations, which cover more than 3,800 stores and include Supercenters, discount stores, Neighborhood Markets and Walmart Express formats. Ruiz will continue reporting to Walmart U.S. President and CEO Bill Simon and all three regional business unit presidents will report to her. Ruiz was most recently EVP of people for Walmart U.S.

Karenann Terrell was promoted to chief information officer for Wal-Mart Stores, and will be responsible for the company’s global technology systems including stores and clubs, supply chain, merchandising and enterprise platforms. Terrell was most recently Wal-Mart’s assistant chief information officer and will continue reporting to Ford.

“The promotions we are announcing today are clear evidence that our succession and management development programs work, and that we have highly talented, well-rounded and experienced business leaders ready to step into larger roles when the opportunities arise,” said Wal-Mart president and CEO Mike Duke in a statement.

Requests for additional information regarding the timing and nature of these promotions were not immediately returned.
