Let the ‘smart’ contact lens creation race begin! Google, Samsung, Sony, Ocumetrics Bionic Lens and even the big brains over at the University of Washington are all geared toward creating the first “smart” contact lens. From blood glucose level detection, to motion sensor cameras, to augmented realities, these lenses are promising the world in the blink of an eye.
However, I’m not blind to the potential for advertisements while wearing these contraptions. Imagine the placement: food ads in the kitchen, vacation ads in the office, mechanic ads on the road. Blink now and get the second one free! Roll your eyes and join today! Try Eight Minute Eyelids and blink away those crow’s feet! The very idea lends itself to far too many ridiculous, yet far too real news headlines. “Local man bites woman, confuses stranger with commercial cookie” or “Bus driver blames crash on ‘smart’ contact lens’ spam.”
We have to ask ourselves, what are we willing to see in order to see.
