Before asking ChatGPT to rewrite a paragraph, she sometimes types sorry for this, then deletes it, then types her actual prompt. She knows the model cannot feel guilt or absolution. The apology is not for the machine. It is for the planet.
This small ritual is appearing everywhere. The user knows, vaguely, that each query consumes electricity and water. The user proceeds anyway. A new kind of climate guilt has settled into the daily texture of knowledge work, and it behaves unlike any environmental guilt that came before it.
The unease is not unfounded. Reporting on the energy and water demands of generative AI has moved from technical journals into mainstream feeds, with recent coverage detailing the cumulative environmental footprint of casual ChatGPT use. Data centers draw power. Cooling systems draw water. The numbers are abstract, the prompts are concrete, and the gap between the two is where the guilt lives.
What makes this guilt strange is its structure. Plastic straws were visible. Long-haul flights were occasional and expensive. Beef was a meal you could see on a plate. AI use, by contrast, is invisible, frictionless, and woven into tasks that already feel virtuous — writing a cover letter, summarizing a medical study, helping a child with homework. The user is asked to feel bad about something that resembles, on its surface, simply thinking faster.
Consider a paralegal in Cleveland who uses ChatGPT dozens of times a day to draft correspondence. He has read the articles. He has seen the environmental comparisons. He continues to use it extensively. When asked why, he does not become defensive. He shrugs. It’s already running, he says. My one query isn’t the problem.
This is the diffusion-of-responsibility argument, and it is doing enormous psychological work right now. Studies have shown that when harm is distributed across millions of actors, individual actors do not feel proportionate ownership of it. The classic example was carbon emissions from driving. The new example is tokens generated per second.
But there is a second mechanism operating beneath the first, and it is more interesting. The guilt is not really being resolved. It is being parked. Users have not concluded that their ChatGPT use is fine. They have concluded that thinking about it carefully would require them to either stop using a tool that has become structurally embedded in their jobs, or to accept a self-image they find uncomfortable. Neither option is available, so the guilt sits in a kind of suspended account, accruing interest.
Psychologists call this state cognitive dissonance, but the term has been so overused it has lost its sharpness. What is happening is more specific. It is the dissonance of a person whose stated values and daily behavior have diverged, and who has decided, mostly unconsciously, that the divergence is the cost of remaining employable.
Take a graduate student in environmental policy at a university in Edinburgh. Her dissertation concerns climate adaptation. She uses ChatGPT to clean up her literature reviews. The irony is not lost on her — she names it openly when the subject comes up at department gatherings. The naming itself has become a kind of social currency. Acknowledging the contradiction publicly is treated as a partial discharge of it. If you can joke about your hypocrisy, you are no longer fully responsible for it.
This is where the new climate guilt diverges sharply from older forms. Older environmental guilt could be addressed through visible substitution — a reusable bag, a train instead of a plane, a meatless Monday. The substitutions were imperfect but they offered the user a place to put the feeling. AI guilt has no equivalent gesture. There is no reusable ChatGPT. There is no organic prompt. The user can use less, but using less of a productivity tool in a productivity-obsessed labor market is not a neutral choice.
The structural pressure is the part most commentary skips. A freelance copywriter in Austin reports that clients who once paid him for a full week of work now expect the same output in two days, on the assumption that he is using AI to compress the timeline. He is. He has to. The market has already priced his tools into his rates. To opt out of AI on environmental grounds would be to opt out of his profession.
This is the trap that makes individual guilt almost beside the point. The decision to use generative AI is not, for most working adults, a discretionary lifestyle choice on par with deciding whether to eat meat. It has become increasingly embedded in white-collar labor since ChatGPT’s public launch. Asking individuals to feel personally responsible for the environmental cost of infrastructure is a category error that older environmental movements eventually had to confront with utilities, highways, and broadband.
And yet the guilt persists, because individual psychology runs on a slower clock than infrastructural change. Our cognitive tendencies evolved for tracking social dynamics in small groups, leaving us without a native framework for evaluating a marginal water cost distributed across a hyperscale data center in Arizona. So it does what it always does when overwhelmed: it generates a small ritual. The apology before the prompt. The self-deprecating joke at the dinner party. The half-hearted resolution to use the model less next month.
These rituals are not nothing. They are the early sediment of a norm forming in real time. Environmental concerns around plastic bags eventually led to policy changes including bans in many jurisdictions. Awareness of flight emissions contributed to the development of carbon offset markets, however flawed. Whether AI guilt produces meaningful regulation, transparent water reporting from providers, or simply a generation of users who have made permanent peace with a low-grade ethical hum remains genuinely open.
What can be said now is that the guilt is real, the behavior will not change, and the gap between the two is not evidence of moral failure. It is evidence that a tool has been adopted faster than the cultural and regulatory scaffolding required to use it cleanly.
Users will keep apologizing to their laptops. Others will keep shrugging. Some will keep joking. Many will keep meeting their deadlines. The data centers will keep humming. And somewhere in the slow accumulation of all those small unresolved feelings, the political will to demand something better from the providers — disclosure, efficiency standards, siting rules, renewable commitments — is being built, query by guilty query.
The discomfort is not a sign that users are doing something wrong. It is a sign that they have noticed something the system has not yet answered for.
